Radon, a naturally occurring radioactive gas is prevalent throughout the UK. We all breathe in radon to some extent and it accounts for half of the radiation dosage each of us receives.

Health data from nine European countries confirms that domestic exposure to radon increases the risk of lung cancer. In the UK between 1000 and 2000 deaths each year are estimated to be caused by exposure to radon.

It is not possible to see, hear, smell or taste radon so it’s important to be aware of radon levels in your area and especially in your home.

Radon is measured in Becquerels (Bq) and the Health Protection Agency recommends that in homes average levels above 200 Bq per cubic centimetre should be reduced. Where average radon levels are between 200 – 500 Bq generally we recommend fitting a positive pressure system. Above 500 Bq a radon sump fan installation is usually required.
